Caption: Tom Van Sant (b. 1931), American artist & creator of the Geosphere Project. Van Sant is seen in his studio in Santa Monica, California, in front of a computer monitor on which is displayed one of the images from the Geosphere Project. The Project, started in 1989, has made the first cloud-free satellite image of Earth, an accurate electronic mosaic built up on a graphics supercomputer from thousands of images taken by the Tiros series of weather satellites. Van Sant has also produced a 2.1-metre diameter globe from the Geosphere image, & plans to use it for educational & environmental purposes.
