Caption: George Vancouver (1757-1798), English explorer and navigator. Vancouver entered the British Navy at 13, and joined James Cook's crew for his voyages to Australia, New Zealand and western North America in 1772-1774. In 1791, Vancouver left England with two ships (the Discovery and the Chatham) to survey the Pacific coast of North America. He mapped the coast and rivers from just north of San Francisco Bay to near the present- day Canada-Alaska border. The ships wintered in the Hawaiian islands, and completed the first accurate survey of them. He returned to England in 1795 after travelling 120,000 kilometres. The Canadian city of Vancouver is named after him.
