Caption: Sergey Ivanovich Vavilov (1891-1951, right), Soviet physicist, carrying out an experiment with colleagues in his laboratory. Vavilov's work included his co-discovery of the Vavilov-Cherenkov effect (Cherenkov radiation), more often ascribed just to Cherenkov. He worked on the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, and was President of the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1945. Photographed in 1938, in Moscow, Russia.
