Caption: Sergey Ivanovich Vavilov (1891-1951), Soviet physicist, in a laboratory at the Physics Institute. Vavilov's work in optics included his co-discovery of the Vavilov-Cherenkov effect (Cherenkov radiation), more often ascribed just to Cherenkov. He worked on the Great Soviet Encyclopedia, and was President of the USSR Academy of Sciences from 1945. Photographed in 1938, in Russia.
