Caption: Steven Weinberg (b.1933), US physicist and Nobel Laureate. Weinberg was educated at Cornell and Princeton. He has held a variety of important academic posts in the USA, and since 1986 has been professor of physics at the University of Texas. Weinberg's most important work was in the unification of the electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces. The predicted existence of neutral currents and the W and Z intermediate vector bosons have been verified experimentally, and Weinberg shared the 1979 Nobel Prize for Physics. More recently, Weinberg was a vociferous proponent of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project. Photographed at CERN in 1979.
