Caption: Dr Jonathan Wolpaw, US physician and Director of a brain-activated technology project. Wolpaw and his team use brain activity, specifically 'mu' waves, as a means of controlling a computer. Subjects trained using biofeedback techniques are able to control the intensity of the 'mu' waves generated in the sensorimotor centre of the brain. These signals are monitored using electrodes in a special cap, and may be interpreted by a computer as simple commands, such as 'move left' or 'move down'. The subject is thus able to move a cursor toward a specified corner of a computer screen. Wolpaw works at the Wadsworth Laboratories of the New York State Department of Health.
