Caption: Josiah Wedgwood. Portrait of Josiah Wedgwood (1730-95), British potter and industrialist. Born into an established family of potters, he founded his own business when aged 29. Ten years later, he built a larger factory and a village to house its workers. His innovations in pottery manufacture allowed affordable but high-quality pieces to be mass produced, making his fortune. He also made some of the finest porcelain and ceramics work of the time. He also invented the pyrometer device for measuring the temperature inside his kilns and in 1782 became the first potter to use steam power at a factory. He also concerned himself with improving roads and canals near his factory.
