Caption: John James Waterston. Portrait of John James Waterston (1811-83), Scottish natural philosopher, engineer and physicist. Waterston was a major figure in the development of the kinetic theory of gases. He put forward a link between heat and the motion of molecules. His work was, however, largely ignored and so in the 1850s Waterston moved his interest to medicine. It was not until after his death that Waterston's ideas were taken seriously, most notably by Lord Rayleigh. Waterston also wrote on astronomy, the physiology of the central nervous system, sound and solar radiation.
