John Rex Whinfield. Portrait of the English organic chemist John Rex Whinfield (1901-1966). In 1941, Whinfield co-discovered the artificial fibre Terylene (also known as Dacron) with J.T. Dickson. This strong polymerized fibre has been mass produced since 1955 and is widely used in the clothing industry.
