Caption: Henry Wells. Portrait of Henry Wells (1805-78), American transport entrepreneur. Wells was a messenger for an express transport company. In 1842 he met William G. Fargo and they founded their own transport company. Wells was made the first president of this business, the American Express Company. Their first line was between the cities of Detroit and Buffalo. The Wells-Fargo company prospered and expanded its carrier network using stagecoaches and trains. By 1855 it was the dominant express passenger and freight carrier in the USA.
