Caption: Chien-Shiung Wu (1912-1997), Chinese-US physicist, in 1973. Wu studied in China before moving to the USA in 1936. She became professor of physics at Columbia University, New York, in 1957. In 1956, Wu and her colleague Lee experimentally confirmed Yang and Lee's theory that parity is violated during weak radioactive decay, overturning many basic assumptions of particle physics. Wu also experimentally confirmed other particle theories, as well as studying X-ray spectra of muonic atoms.
