Norbert Wiener. Portrait of the US mathematician Norbert Wiener (1894-1964). Wiener was a youthful prodigy and studied zoology and philosophy before being appointed Professor of Mathematics at MIT, USA (1932-1960). He produced important results in stochastic (random) processes and then worked on weapons feedback systems in World War II. This inspired his thoughts on combining electronic devices and neural physiology, and he proceeded to found the field of cybernetics. Photographed in 1953.
