His academic career was based at Harvard University, USA. He worked in organic chemistry synthesis, with a particular interest in natural products. These range from medicinal drugs to chemicals such as vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) and chlorophyll, both of which were synthesised by Woodward. He received the 1965 Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
