Caption: Walter Wellman (1858-1934) US explorer, standing on the deck of the polar airship of the Chicago Record-Herald. Wellman worked as a journalist for several newspapers, including the Record-Herald, and then turned to exploration, especially of the Arctic. In 1894 he journeyed north of Spitzbergen. He led another Arctic expedition in 1898-1899, and attempted to reach the North Pole in 1899 but failed. In 1906 the Wellman Chicago Record-Herald Polar Expedition used the airship America to attempt to reach the Pole, but several attempts over the next three years all failed. Unlike the 1897 Andree balloon flight, all the crew survived. Photograph from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
