Caption: John Whitridge Williams (1866-1931), American obstetrician. After graduating in medicine, Whitridge Williams studied pathology and obstetrics in Europe. He returned to America and became professor of obstetrics at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he conducted extensive research into the pathology of obstetrical and gynaecological disorders. He was a prolific author of scientific papers, and his exhaustive Textbook of Obstetrics is still in print under the title Williams' Obstetrics. This portrait is from the Bain News Service, one of America's oldest news picture agencies, which holds images dating from between the 1890s and 1930s.
