Caption: Sir Arnold W. Wolfendale (born 1927), British astronomer. Wolfendale was born in Rugby and studied physics at Manchester University. His research career started in cosmic ray physics, and then broadened into general astrophysics. He worked at the universities of Manchester and then Durham. He served as President of the Royal Astronomical Society (1981-1983) and as Astronomer Royal (1990-1995). He was knighted in 1995, and in 1996 was appointed Professor of Experimental Physics at the Royal Institution. In both this latter role and as Astronomer Royal, he has given many public lectures on astronomy and astrophysics.
