Caption: Sir Richard van der Riet Woolley (1906-1986), British-South African mathematician and astronomer. Woolley was born in England, and educated in South Africa, and then at Cambridge University, where he studied stellar atmospheres with Eddington. During his career he was Chief Assistant at the Royal Greenwich Observatory (1933-1937), Director of the Commonwealth Solar Observatory in Canberra, Australia (from 1939), and Astronomer Royal (1956-1971). He served as President of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1963 to 1965, was awarded the society's Gold Medal in 1971, and was knighted in 1963. From 1972 to 1976 he was Director of the South African Astronomical Observatory.
