Caption: Sir Francis Edward Younghusband (1863-1942), British soldier and explorer. He explored Manchuria in northern China in 1886. In 1887, he travelled from China to India, crossing the Gobi Desert and the Mustagh Pass, which is at an altitude of almost 6000 metres. In the early 20th century he led a military expedition to Tibet, coercing the Dalai Lama into signing a treaty that opened Tibet up to trade. He also explored the Indus, Sutlej and Brahmaputra rivers. He was captivated by Mount Everest, the world's tallest mountain, and tried three times to climb it, failing each time. He detailed these attempts in Everest: The Challenge (1936).
