Caption: Professor Alex Zettl, nanotechnology researcher, with carbon nanotube dust on his fingertips. Zettl works at the University of California at Berkeley, USA. His research is primarily aimed at using carbon nanotubes and other new materials to make smaller, faster computers. Nanotubes are cylinders of carbon atoms similar to buckminsterfullerenes. The nanotubes could be used as wires in circuits on the molecular scale. This would allow circuits and machines to be built that would be far smaller than those currently available. Photographed in 2002.
