Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Magdeburg sphere experiment. Schoolgirl trying to pull apart a Magdeburg sphere. The sphere is a ball split in half with handles on either piece. The two halves are placed together and a vacuum pump is used to remove the air inside. It is then extremely hard to separate the two pieces due to external air pressure. The Magdeburg sphere was developed by Otto Von Guericke (1602-1686), a German physicist, to demonstrate his air pump, which he invented in 1650. The pump was used to create a vacuum, which was not known to exist until that time.
