Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Student conducting a survey using a quadrat. A quadrat is a measured rectangle, often a square divided into equal sections by string, which is used to isolate an area from which a sample is to be taken. Quadrats are often used in a number of scientific disciplines, including, ecology, biology and zoology, for the purpose of measuring the abundance of different species within a given area. By sampling many quadrats over a large area, such as a field, biologists can gather data for statistical analysis and get an idea of the different species that live there.
