Caption: Silversword plant. Single silversword plant, Argyroxiphium sp.. This plant is native to the Hawaiian islands and is threatened by the alien invading Argentine ant, Iridomyrmex humilis. The silversword relies on insects such as the yellow- faced bee to pollinate it. However the Argentine ant is a successful colonizer, out-competing both native Hawaiian ants and other insects which pollinate the silversword. This has dramatically reduced the ability of the plant to reproduce. Photographed in Hawaii, USA.
