Caption: Coastal plants. Mixed community of plants growing near the coast. Plants in coastal environments have evolved adaptations that allow them to cope with high salinity (salt) levels. They are therefore known as halophytes. Salt is present in coastal soil and is also blown onto the leaves of plants by the wind. Many halophytes have thick, fleshy leaves (for example, green/red) that store water. The water in these leaves is probably used by the plants at times when salt levels in the soil are so high that water leaches from the plant tissues by osmosis. Photographed in the South- East Alentejano and Vicentina Coast Nature Reserve, Portugal.
