Caption: Ginkgo leaf. Kirlian photograph of a leaf of the Maidenhair tree Ginkgo biloba. Kirlian photography obtains an image of the electromagnetic discharge (corona effect) between a subject and an applied electric field. The luminosity of the corona depends on many factors including the health of the subject. The Ginkgo is an ancient tree, being the sole survivor of an order of Gymnosperms that flourished 200 million years ago. A native of the Far East, it is thought to grow wild only in remote parts of China. The leaf's resemblance to the Maidenhair fern with forked veins, notched edges and wedge shape, has earned it the common name Maidenhair Tree.
