Caption: Aerial view of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, the particle physics laboratory at Berkeley, California. The laboratory was founded in the 1930s by Ernest Lawrence, inventor of the cyclot- ron particle accelerator, & was known for many years as the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory. In the 1950s & 1960s it was one of the world's leading high-energy physics laboratories & made many fundamental discoveries. Its major accelerator was the Bevatron, commissioned in 1954 & housed in the circular structure just below & right of centre. The Bevatron is today used in conjunction with the SuperHilac linear accelerator to collide heavy ions, a combination called the Bevelac.
