Caption: Animation of the human respiratory system, showing the lungs expanding and contracting during breathing. The lungs expand as the volume of the chest cavity is increased when the diaphragm muscle (pink, lower centre) contracts. This draws air (blue) into the lungs through a branching network of bronchi and bronchioles, which connect to the mouth via the trachea. The heart pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs, where it absorbs oxygen and releases carbon dioxide, which is exhaled.
