Caption: Vapours and flames from a butane lighter, schlieren video. Butane is denser than air, and when the lighter is opened without lighting it, the butane can be seen sinking down. When the butane is lit, the hot flame makes the gas much lighter than air, and a fast-rising column of hot gases is seen. Schlieren photography is an imaging technique that can be used to visualize air flows and thermal plumes.
