Caption: High-speed flash photo showing the results of the impact of a droplet on a liquid surface. The walls of the initial crater collapse cause the spread of waves in concentric rings outward from the centre. Inward-spreading waves are forced upwards to form a column, crowned by the initial drop. At a certain height this becomes unstable, the surface tension breaks with the formation of small droplets and the whole edifice collapses.
