Caption: Telomerase enzyme. Telomerase (blue) is an enzyme that adds telomeres, repeat units of six DNA bases, to the ends of chromosomes. It uses an RNA template (red backbone) to assemble repeated units of the DNA bases TTAGGG, where T is thymine (yellow), A is adenine (green) and G is guanine (pink). The telomeres protect the ends of the chromosome from degradation during replication.
