Caption: Walls of ancient stone dwelling in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico, an Anasazi cultural and administrative center dating back more than a thousand years and which was the site of dozens of impressive stone buildings many of them oriented to solar, lunar, and cardinal directions. Some Pueblo Indians today, descendants of the Anasazi, believe that Chaco Canyon was a special gathering place where thousands of people converged to share their ceremonies, traditions, and knowlege. Fajada Butte in the background is thought to have had ceremonial importance for the Anasazi and is the site of a solar marker consisting of three stone slabs and a set of spiral petroglyphs. Chaco was abandoned around 1200 A.D., possibly in response to a prolonged drought in the area.
