Caption: One of the many hot springs in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Hot springs occur when ground water comes in contact with hot rocks heated by a large magma reservoir that lies directly beneath the park at a depth of just a few kilometers. The magma rises from a hotspot within the earth's mantle, and is responsible for all of the geothermal activity found in the park. The colors found in and around hot springs are caused by mineral deposits and microorganisms that are able to survive in boiling water.
