Caption: Wild rice (Zizania palustris) is the seed of an annual grass that grows in shallow lakes and streams in the Great Lakes region of the U.S. It is harvested in late summer by Native Americans who have, for untold generations, regarded it as a sacred element of their culture and central component of many of their ceremonies. It is also grown commercially in this area and other parts of the world by non-Indians. The rice is high in protein and low in fat.
