Caption: Purple martins (Progne subis) perched on their gourd-shaped houses in purple martin colony next to lake in Ohio. Martins migrate to North America each spring from South America to nest and bring up their young. They will occupy these houses until all their chicks have fledged. The gourd shape is patterned after real gourds which martins sometimes inhabit in the wild. Martins are the largest North American swallows and are common throughout the eastern half of the U.S., parts of the West Coast, and southern Canada.
