Caption: Featherstar, or crinoid. This marine invertebrate is a filter-feeder, sifting particles of plankton from the current with its feathery arms. It is a member of an ancient class of echinoderms, animals that include starfish and sea urchins. Fossils that are almost identical to modern crinoids have been found from the Ordovician period, some 450 million years ago.
