Caption: Total solar eclipse of 22nd July 2009, filmed from China. In the moments before totality, the Sun is viewed through a filter, which is removed as totality begins. The next stage is the "diamond ring effect", with the last bright remnant of the Sun's surface seen just over the edge of the Moon. At totality, the whole of the Sun's surface is covered by the Moon, and the extensive white corona is seen.
