If the planet passes in front of its star as seen from Earth, there is a regular dip in brightness. The shape of this dip provides information about the planet's characteristics, such as its size. By spectroscopic methods, the composition of its atmosphere and even its temperature can be determined. Planets discovered by this method include HD 209458 b.
