Caption: Meissner effect. This is an effect in which a permanent magnet (golden cube) levitates above a disc of a superconductor material when the superconductor is cooled below its critical temperature, at which point it expels all magnetic fields. In this demonstration, liquid nitrogen at -196 degrees Celsius is used to cool the yttrium barium copper oxide superconductor.
