Caption: Beech woodland. Deciduous beech (Fagus sylvatica) woodland with a small stream running through it. A track crosses a ford in the stream. Beech has a vast distribution over Europe, typically being found in lowland woods. The tree is mainly valued for its wood, which is used in furniture-making, flooring, panelling, and making handles for tools. The tree's fruits (beechnuts) have been used as animal fodder and a coffee substitute, and the distilled wood yields creosote, a tar-like wood preservative. Photogaphed in Northumberland, UK.
