Caption: American aspens. View up into the canopy of autumnal American aspen trees, Populus tremuloides. The aspen is a species of poplar, also named the trembling aspen, so called because it appears to tremble in the wind. Its rounded leaves have flattened stalks, allowing the blades to flutter in the slightest breeze. The orange colour of the leaves is caused by the breakdown of the leaves' green chlorophyll pigment before they are lost in autumn, allowing the other pigments to be seen. Photographed in White River National Forest, Colorado, USA.
