Caption: Beech woodland. View of a woodland containing common beech trees (Fagus sylvatica), seen in the spring. Sunlight is illuminating the mist around the trees causing a haze effect. The beech is a common European deciduous tree, which can grow up to 30 metres high. It can grow on acidic or chalky soil, and prefers a temperate oceanic climate. Its wood is fairly hard and compact, and is used in joinery, furniture, flooring and handles for implements. Although normally found growing wild, it is sometimes cultivated as a decorative species in parks. Photographed in the Northumberland National Park, England.
