Caption: Autumn tree. Tree showing the autumn colours of its leaves. The colours are due to the loss of the dominant green pigment chlorophyll. This is the pigment responsible for photosynthesis, and it is broken down in preparation for the leaves being shed. Its breakdown allows other pigments to be seen. Photographed in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina, USA.
