Caption: Yew tree (Taxus baccata). The yew is an evergreen tree native to Britain, and now distributed throughout Europe and north Africa. It grows up to 28 metres high, and is a very long lived species with specimens up to 2000 years old. It inhabits forests that provide dense shade, such as oak woods, and prefers a limestone and chalk soil. Yew wood is used for furniture & tool handles and is also a good firewood. Photographed in Cumbria, England.
