Caption: False colour transmission electron micrograph of human T-cell leukaemia viruses III (HTLV-111), the cause of AIDS,Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. They are seen here budding off from an H9 cell, a special cancer cell line for culturing the virus. HTLV-111 affects T-lymphocyte cells of the immune system, particularly T-helper cells, which are responsible for stimulating the antibody- producing B-lymphocytes. The body's defence system is undermined & prey to "opportunistic" infections, notably pneumonia & Kaposi's sarcoma. The virus is transmitted by sexual contact through mixed blood products.
