Caption: Fluorescent light micrograph of several cells labelled to show an infection with cytomegalovirus (concentrated ovals of green fluorescence). Cytomegalovirus, a member of the herpesvirus group, causes a condition among newborns called cytomegalic disease, characterized by jaundice & an enlarged liver & spleen. The virus is transmitted to the infant by the mother either while in the womb or during birth. Some infected babies show no evidence of the disease, for others the symptoms may be fatal. Magnification: X160 (at 35mm size).
