Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of virions (virus particles - stained yellow) of the papillomavirus, which belongs to the papovavirus class. The class includes the papilloma (wart) viruses (warts grow on hands & soles of feet as well as mucous membranes in mouth & on genitals) & the polyoma viruses (cause mice tumours). Individual virions have icosahedral capsid symmetry (35-45nm across) & do not possess a lipoprotein envelope. Genetic information is in form of double-stranded DNA, contained within the protein capsid. Nearly all members of the group are oncogenic (capable of producing tumours). Magnification: x2900 at 35mm, x5800 at 6x7cm size.
