Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of AIDS viruses (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome); 1 is seen emerging from a stricken T4 lymphocyte (white blood cell of immmune system, which AIDS destroys & renders victim liable to a no. of fatal secondary diseases). The virus (named LAV - by Montagnier & HTLV-111 by Gallo in US) is a retrovirus, ie its genetic program is held in RNA (red cores at centre of viral spheres), translated into DNA inside the T4 cell & infiltrates the cell's own DNA; once activated the viral DNA replicates & progeny bud from the cell wall, killing the host cell. Mag. X32,400 at 35mm.
