Caption: Aerial view of laboratory buildings of the Superconducting Super Collider (SSC) project. These first buildings are laboratories used to test the components of the SSC particle accelerator. The accelerator will be built inside an 87-km circumference tunnel about 70 metres underground. An access shaft for the tunnel is at bottom right. When completed in late 1999, the SSC will be used to collide protons at energies of 40 TeV (1 TeV = 1000 billion electron volts). Data from the SSC may provide the first view of the predicted Higgs particle, and may help explain the nature and origin of mass.
