Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of the virus that causes AIDS. Orange & pink particles of the virus (designated HIV-1, or Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1) are seen budding from an infected lymphoid cell. The virus affects T-lymphocyte cells of the immune system, particularly the T-helper cells which activate the antibody-producing B-lymphocytes. The body's defence system is undermined & prey to opportunistic infections, notably pneumonia & Kaposi's sarcoma. The virus is transmitted by sexual contact & through blood products. Magnification: x34,300 at 35mm size, x68,600 at 6x7cm size. Rossdale colouring. Original is BW print M050/063.
