Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) showing AIDS virus particles (orange and blue) above the surface of an infected T4 lymphocyte, a white blood cell. Two forms of the AIDS virus are now recognized (1988), designated human immunodeficiency virus types 1 and 2 (HIV-1 and -2). HIV-1 is seen here. At centre left is a newly released virus particle (virion), with a group of mature virions to the right. Infection with HIV depletes the population of T4 cells and thus disables the immune system, rendering its victim liable to a number of fatal diseases.
