Caption: Norwalk virus. Transmission electron micrograph of the Norwalk virus, originally isolated from a school outbreak in Norwalk, Connecticut, USA in 1968. The virus is associated with diarrhoea and vomiting outbreaks among humans and no equivalent animal strains have been found to date. Characteristic of this virus are radial projections, which are often lop-eared. The Norwalk virus is believed to be similar to the calciviruses, which are also implicated in gastro- enteritis & have been found in the faeces of children with diarrhoea.
